Employees of The Baffler have announced that they have formed a union as part of the Workers United New York New Jersey Regional Joint Board.
Workers at the New York-based magazine requested voluntary recognition in a letter presented to management on Monday morning.
Since its founding in 1988, The Baffler has articulated an unapologetically pro-worker and pro-union politics in the reportage and criticism it has published. In its letter to management, the new union expressed that voluntary recognition would bring the organization more closely into alignment with those values, while allowing workers to collaborate effectively for their common interests.
“As an employee of The Baffler for over eight years and a dedicated reader for many more, I’m thrilled that we are taking this important step to unionize. It reflects the kind of pro-labor work we have published since day one.” – Zach Webb, Web Editor
“When I joined the staff of The Baffler just over one year ago, I was grateful to be part of an institution that valued workers through its mandate as a left-wing magazine and through the culture created by all staff within the organization. I’m thrilled to be part of Baffler Workers United, where our union precipitates from The Baffler’s longstanding commitment to covering the labor movement.” – Leila Markosian, Administrative Coordinator
Unionization efforts at Baffler Workers United are led in collaboration with Workers United New York New Jersey, a joint board of Workers United, a 70,000 member strong labor union. In unionizing, the Baffler staff joins its peers at outlets like Harper’s, Jacobin, Jewish Currents, The Nation, The New Republic, The American Prospect, and New York Focus.
