Our Joint Board recently caught up with the winners of this year’s union scholarship!
Mathews Martinez Vargas is attending Montclair State University and will be majoring in Graphic Design. His father, Leocadio de Jesus Martinez, has been a union member since 2017 and works in stock at Alfred Dunner. The family is originally from the Dominican Republic and now lives in New Jersey.
Matthews’ parents shared that their son is a dedicated and applied student, and that they are grateful to the union for giving him this great opportunity.
Adriana Arrigo is attending Rutgers University and her brother Andrew Arrigo is attending Bergen Community College. Their father, Peter Arrigo, is a member of the union and works at Martin Greenfield in Brooklyn. Adriana is taking courses to prepare for a career in the pharmaceutical industry and Andrew is taking courses in accounting to prepare for a career as a CPA.
At the New York City Labor Day Parade, we also caught up with Amari Ishmael, one of the winners of last year’s scholarship. Amari is working towards a career in criminal justice. His mother, Stacey Ishmael, is a member of our union and works at Duane Reade.
About the scholarship: Our Joint Board offers annual scholarships to all dependent children of members in good standing. Individual $1,250 scholarships will be awarded to each winner for every year they are enrolled in college or vocational school following high school graduation.
